IRebuild Africa is dedicated to addressing the alarming issue of violence against women and girls. This widespread problem occurs in various settings, including workplaces, online platforms, streets, educational institutions, prisons, and healthcare facilities. Disturbingly, statistics reveal that a significant percentage of women face domestic violence, emotional abuse, and sexual violence, with some even forced into non-consensual sexual relationships.
In Cameroon, like many countries globally, violence against women and girls is a pressing concern. The regions affected by armed conflicts, specifically the North and the Anglophone Northwest and Southwest, witness a distressing rise in cases of sexual violence and assault. To combat the devastating impact of gender-based violence (GBV) on survivors’ mental well-being, IRebuild Africa creates safe spaces in schools and communities. These spaces provide survivors with crucial support, including psychosocial assistance, legal aid, clinical management of rape services, comprehensive sensitization on GBV, and accessible referral pathways.
Launched in 2022, the Keep Her Safe program is a pioneering initiative by IRebuild Africa that takes a comprehensive approach to preventing and addressing gender-based violence in schools and communities. Recognizing that all girls deserve to learn in a safe and equitable environment, this innovative program engages community members, students, and school staff to create the necessary support systems and protective measures.
First, the program informs students about the various forms of school-related violence, empowering them with the knowledge to recognize and report incidents. Simultaneously, the program carries out sensitization outreaches in communities, thereby, equipping them with the skills and protocols to handle such cases effectively.
The program has already reached over 2,000 girls through school-based initiatives and community outreach. By fostering a culture of safety, respect, and accountability, Keep Her Safe is transforming the lives of young girls and paving the way for a future where gender-based violence is a thing of the past.
