On 6 February 2023, we joined the global community in marking the 12th anniversary of the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation. This day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 to raise awareness and mobilize action to end this harmful practice by 2030, as part of the Sustainable Development Goals. FGM is a form of violence against women and girls that involves the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia for non-medical reasons. It can cause severe physical and psychological consequences, such as bleeding, infections, infertility, trauma, and even death. The Keep Her Safe project was officially launched on September 3, 2022, with the aim of mobilizing and sensitizing 50 young girls aged 18-35 on various forms of violence and its effects on women and girls. On Friday, 18th November 2022 IRebuild Africa organized a survivor-centered case management workshop in Yaounde, which targeted GBV case workers on survivor-centered case management skills building. The objective of this program was to improve available services provision and raise community awareness of services for survivors of gender-based violence. GirlsPower through Education This workshop mobilized 12 case workers from 12 organizations working on gender-based violence. Participants had an overview of the various conventions, advocating for the protection of women to which Cameroon belongs. Some of these conventions include The CEDAW convention, the BEIJING convention, UNSCR Resolution 1325, the Mapoto protocol (African Union), the Cameroon constitution itself, the civil code, and the penal code.
