From June 11-12, 2024, IRebuild Africa organized the Girls Empowerment Program (GEP) in Buea, Cameroon where it held its annual summer event under the theme “Empowering Girls to Lead and Inspire.” This transformative two-day program brought together 60 teenage girls aged 11-18, equipping them with the tools and mindset to navigate adolescence and beyond with resilience and purpose.
Beyond the traditional focus on financial literacy and menstrual health, the GEP curriculum took a holistic approach to the well-being of these young women. Participants engaged in discussions and activities centered around self-esteem, consent, and healthy relationships – critical life skills that will serve them well as they grow into confident, empowered leaders. Hands-on workshops on money management, pastry-making, and natural juice production also provided valuable practical experience.

The true impact of the GEP was evident in the powerful testimonials shared by the participants. Many girls expressed feeling more confident in making decisions, becoming community leaders, and navigating relationships with a deeper understanding of consent and personal boundaries. The enthusiasm and gratitude displayed by the cohort has motivated the organizers to continue expanding the reach and impact of this transformative program.
As these young female changemakers return to their families, they are poised to become role models and agents of change, inspiring their peers and younger siblings to also pursue their dreams and lead with confidence. The ripple effects of the GEP’s work are sure to be felt throughout Buea and beyond, as the program continues to empower the next generation of female leaders.
